St. Patrick did not consider himself a man of letters; the short texts that survive reflect, however, his powerful personality. A contemporary and fellow missionary of St. Patrick, Secundinus is an enthusiastic admirer and defender of St. Patrick in this hymn.

1 St. Patrick—Magonus Sucatus Patricius, to give him his full name—was born about 385 in some unknown town of Roman Britain.1 He was the son of a certain Calpornius2 and his wife Concessa.3 Patrick’s father appears to have been a member of the city council (decurio)4 and thus a man of some social standing.
